HELSINKI, FI (August 20, 2021) –  After two days without sailing due to extreme weather conditions, official competition for the 2021 Evli 12mR World Championship resumed today with three races held in the Gulf of Finland, hosted by Nyländska Jaktklubben, NJK.

With pent up anticipation, the crew energy was palpable around sunny Helsinki harbor this morning as sailors raced to the NJK docks on bicycles and scooters. The first race started at 10:05 EEST, south of Isossari Island with steady 16-18 knot winds increasing to 20 kts+ in choppy 1.5-1.7m seas.

In Race One of the day (3rd of the series), Wings (K-15) led the fleet followed closely by Vim (US-15) and Blue Marlin (FIN-1). Wings was first to the weather mark and continued in the lead downwind until a malfunctioning spinnaker pole trip line resulted in the pole remaining on the lee side of the boat after a gybe. The following spinnaker takedown and late jib hoist further reduced Wings speed which enabled Blue Marlin and Vim to advance close abeam as the three yachts approached the mark. Vim emerged just clear ahead while Wings established an outside overlap on Blue Marlin. During the rounding Blue Marlin was on the receiving end of contact (3 “taps”) to her transom by Wing’s bow. As Wings completed her required 360 penalty turn, a mainsail batten parted ripping a hole in the mainsail. Shortly after this series of mishaps, Wings’ skipper hailed the Race Committee to announce their retirement from the race as they headed to the dock for a mainsail change; unfortunately they were unable to return to the course for the remaining two races of the day.

At the start of Race Two Vim (US-15) and Blue Marlin (FIN-1) entered the course from opposite sides of the line, the former at the RC boat the later at the pin end. Each continued to sail out to opposite sides of the course with Filca II (K-14) covering Vim. On their first crossing, mid-course Blue Marlin on port, was forced to duck Vim sailing on starboard but did cross in front of Flica II as they continued to alternate sides of the course. Meanwhile, Nini Anker (K-14) suffered a coffee-grinder (winch) breakdown which dictated her retirement and return to the dock for repairs. Further back, Vema III (N-11), Vanity V (K-5) and Thea (D-1) sailed closely together throughout vying for the 4th place finish. Jenetta’s (K-1) mainsail had parted after the 2nd mark rounding and she too was forced to retire from racing for the day. There were no further position changes in this race– the finish order being Vim, Blue Marlin, Flica II, Vema III, Vanity V and Thea.

Five of the nine yacht fleet started Race Three; four finished. Blue Marlin (FIN-1) suffered mainsail damage early on and also retired for the day. Through attrition of the fleet and sheer persistence Vema III (N-11) who sailed all three races of the day without incident (as did 103-year old Thea (D-1), added a third place finish in this race moving her up in the overall standings. Finish positions in the four boat final race of the day race were Vim, Flica II, Vema III and Thea.

In the overall standings of the 5 race series (now with one toss-out), the top three competitors are Vim (US-15) with 4 points, followed by Blue Marlin (FIN-1) with 9 points and Flica II (K-14) in third place to date with 12 points.

Racing wraps up tomorrow (Saturday) with 2 races planned. Follow the action LIVE (or recorded playback) via Sport Rec Race Tracker.

DAY 1+2: PHOTO GALLERIES | DAY 3: UPDATE

HELSINKI, FI (August 19, 2021) Windy and choppy conditions kept the fleet at the 2021 Evli 12mR World Championship on the docks of Nyländska Jaktklubben, NJK on Wednesday and again today.

Earlier this morning, the NJK Race Committee considered a course in the lee of Isossari Island and team representatives were consulted to check the conditions of this more sheltered, yet smaller racing area. After deliberations, the International Jury asked for the opinion of the skippers whether to sail in the 20 knots of wind and 2.5 meter choppy waves. The skippers in turn requested that Jury President Jan Stage make the call. Stage decided that races would not be held in this area for safety reasons owing to the required passage on the hazardous Northern side of the island close to the shoreline and rocks.

Four starts will be attempted tomorrow, starting at 10.00hrs. EEST when the forecast calls for more moderate conditions.

Below you will see what the crews have been up to while waiting for the weather to improve and a few snapshots of the Day 1 Prize Giving-Welcome Reception in the beautiful NJK Clubhouse.

HELSINKI, FI (August 17, 2021) –  Official competition for the 2021 EVLI 12mR World Championship commenced today with two races held in the Gulf of Finland, hosted by Nyländska Jaktklubben, NJK.

In Race 1 keeping an eye to the sky paid off for the hometown Blue Marlin (FIN-1) team, skippered by Henrik Andersin (Kotka, FI) who won the first race in light and shifty winds. On the first weather leg, Vim (US-15) took an early lead after crossing Wings (K-15) on starboard with the 9-boat fleet in pursuit on the right side of the course. Blue Marlin (FIN-1) was mid-fleet when Andersin noticed “the clouds looked different than usual.” Anticipating a significant wind shift, he split from the fleet taking the left side of the course and was first to the top mark followed only by Flica II (K-14). These two held their positions downwind taking first and second place respectively followed by Vim (US-15) who finished third.

Vim (US-15), helmed by Patrick Howaldt won Race 2 and claimed first place overall on Day 1 | Sailpix.fi

After a pause for course adjustments, one abandoned start and one general recall, Race 2 got underway in a building 15-17 knot breeze with choppy seas. Wings (K-15) helmed by Philipp Skafte-Holm (Copenhagen, DK), held an early lead until crossed by Vim (US-15) on starboard during the second weather leg. Vim (US-15) sailed to the right side of the course while Wings (K-15) continued to the left closely pursued by Jenetta (K-1) helmed by Thomas Müller, (Flensburg, DE) who eventually overtook them at the last mark rounding. Vim (US-15) skipper, Patrick Howaldt said: “It was very close racing in difficult conditions, the first three boats finished within one boat length of each other—this is a very closely-matched and competitive fleet.”

With combined score of 4 points Vim (US-15) won the day, Blue Marlin (FIN-1) finished second with 5 points and Jenetta (K-1) claimed third place overall with 7 points. Racing continues tomorrow (Wednesday) with 2 races planned. Follow the action LIVE (or recorded playback) via Sport Rec Race Tracker.

HELSINKI, FI (August 16, 2021) – If today’s two practice races are any indication, the 2021 EVLI 12mR World Championship will surely provide an exciting week of racing for both sailors and spectators. NJK Commodore Mats Welin said: “Although this will be the first time the 12mRs will hold their World Championship in Finland, NJK has a long history with the Class including participation at our 50th and 75th Anniversary celebrations in 1911 and 1936. Now during our 160th Anniversary year we are very pleased to host the International Twelve Metre Class and proud that two competitors will race under the NJK flag.”

President of the International Twelve Metre Association, Paul Buttrose said: “It is an honor for the International Twelve Metre Class to be hosted by NJK and racing in Helsinki. This Vintage fleet is the most widely-traveled and every boat has a fascinating history. Adding meticulous preparation and such a high standard of competition secures their recognition as “the backbone of our Class.”
